Position Summary: The Department of Public Works is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable and collaborative professional for the City's Wastewater Collections, in the position of Utility Worker. Under general supervision of the Wastewater Collection Supervisor(s), the ideal candidate will join a team of professionals performing Wastewater Collection daily operations & maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will possess excellent physical and technical skills to support team goals and objectives.

Position Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent and experience comparable to one-year full time journey level construction, maintenance, or equipment operation. Must possess a valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or must obtain within six (6) months of hire. Must possess an Arizona Grade I Wastewater Collection System Operator certification or obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Tasks: Inspect, maintain and repair the sanitary sewer collection system to ensure safe and efficient operation; inspect sewer lines, manholes, and lift stations; operate a variety of complex sewer line cleaning equipment, including hydro-cleaners and other related equipment to remove debris from sewer lines and wet wells; utilize hand tools, jack hammers, whackers, digging bars, shovels and other related tools or equipment as required; inspect sewer line cleaning equipment, power tools, hand tools, vehicles, and other large equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation; perform confined space entries; provide quality customer service to address citizen complaints or problems, provide requested information, and/or take the appropriate measure to ensure an expedient resolution of citizen satisfaction; adhere to all safety policies and procedures; assume responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Sanitary sewer operation & maintenance principles; sewer construction practices and techniques; safe and proper handling procedures for use of tools and equipment; safe operation and maintenance of equipment; use of computers; record keeping values, safety principals, regulations and safe work practices; personal protective equipment; environmental conditions including sewage, potentially infectious wastes, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other possible toxic gases and substances.

Skill and Ability to: Provide excellent customer service through positive and professional communication; resolve customer inquiries, requests and complaints; build and maintain effective working relationships within a team; communicate effectively and efficiently; follow policies and procedures to ensure tasks and equipment are operated safely; demonstrate a positive attitude; demonstrate a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment; exercise sound judgment and effective problem solving; safely operate and maintain tools and equipment of trade; recognize hazards of work and follow safe work practices; collect and organize facts and data both orally and in writing; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; accurately record field data manually and by using computer programs; perform emergency standby duty on a rotational basis; work overtime as needed, including nights, holidays, and weekends; work in extreme weather conditions; work in confined spaces; work in high traffic areas.

Physical and Visual Ability: Sufficient to effectively perform required duties and to safely operate required equipment and city vehicles as needed; must be able to see clearly, with correction if necessary, during both day and night, and in potentially adverse weather conditions; must possess ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and capable of lifting 60 pounds frequently with a maximum of 100 pounds.

Hearing and Speaking Ability: Sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person, over the radio and by telephone.
