About the Department/College

This is a 12-month non-tenure-track position to join our accredited Competency and Entrustment-Based Education Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program in Flagstaff. NAU DPT consists of one hybrid program and two residential programs, one at the Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC) and the other on the Flagstaff Mountain campus. The Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training is in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). The NAU DPT Program is a key part of NAU New Economy Initiative to prepare more DPT learners to stay in Arizona and work to address the health disparities in the state. For this initiative to be successful, the DPT Program partners with our community and academic partners to remove barriers and increase access to physical therapist education programs.

About the Position

The Northern Arizona University (NAU) Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program is a leader in Competency and Entrustment-Based Education (CEBE) to meet the diverse and evolving health needs of society. A CEBE approach seamlessly aligns outcomes and assessment processes throughout a curriculum of didactic and clinical education courses to prepare graduates for the demands of physical therapy clinical practice. The NAU DPT Program consists of one hybrid program and two residential programs located in Phoenix and Flagstaff.

The NAU DPT Program seeks a candidate whose professional experiences support this paradigm shift and the use of technology reflective of the future of health professions education. This is a 12-month non-tenure-track positions in the residential Flagstaff program. The breadth and depth of our current faculty allows a review of candidate applications from all key areas of practice. The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2025.

Responsibilities Include:

• Curriculum Development: Design and implement curriculum content for the physical therapy program.
• Teaching: Deliver lectures, lead discussions, and provide hands-on learning experiences to students.
• Research: Conduct scholarly research activities, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, and participate in research collaborations within the field.
• Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to students, fostering their professional growth.
• Clinical Practice: Demonstrate clinical skills related to neurophysiological and primary care practice, integrating real-world experiences into educational programs.
• Collaboration: Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues and healthcare professionals to advance knowledge and practice in the field.
• Professional Development: Stay updated on advancements in areas of clinical expertise, teaching methodologies, and evidence-based practices to enhance teaching and research efforts.
• Assessment: Evaluate student performance, assess learning outcomes, and provide feedback to support student progress and program improvement.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

12 month, non-tenure track, full time position, starting July 2025 in Flagstaff Moutain Campus.

Minimum Qualifications

• Entry-level doctoral degree in physical therapy (DPT) from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of five years of full-time post-licensure clinical practice.
• Contemporary expertise in a variety of clinical and foundational content areas.
• Record of effective clinical or academic teaching.
• Eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in Arizona.

Preferred Qualifications

• Terminal academic doctoral degree (i.e. PhD, EdD, DSc) from an accredited institution in a field related to physical therapy.
• Specialty certification.
• Academic experience within a physical therapist education program.
• Experience, and/or desire to work in a competency-based education framework.
• Experience in use of technology.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

A faculty member entrusted with teaching and conducting scholarly activities in various areas of a physical therapy curriculum require a deep understanding of foundational concepts related to physical therapists as first contact providers. The faculty member must have content expertise, along with a strong grasp of evidence-based practice in clinical care settings across the lifespan and should possess research acumen to contribute to scholarly activities and curriculum development in these specialized fields. Crucial skills include effective teaching methods, clinical proficiency, and clear communication to engage students and contribute to research endeavors. The faculty member should demonstrate critical thinking abilities, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and exhibit a commitment to continuous learning to advance the knowledge and practice of physical therapy effectively.

Commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
