Job Description
The position will be associated with Dr. Barker's lab in the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute at NAU's main campus. The Barker lab primarily studies the NIH priority pathogens Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii which are risk group 3 pathogens. These studies involve multidisciplinary approaches including molecular genetics, immunology, and pathogenesis in murine models of disease. Candidates with strong background in any of these fields are encouraged to apply. Under general supervision, the ideal candidate applies knowledge, skills and abilities obtained in pursuit of an MS degree as well as general experience, to plan, design and complete analysis of vaccine trials and other animal experiments in ABSL3 Lab as needed for the U19 and other funded projects in planning, coordinating, and monitoring the execution of research activities. This person will act as primary contact for administrative and logistical activities required to support research in the ABSL3, including training and management of assistant ABSL3 manager (RA student position), completion of IBC, IACUC, and various permits and inspections needed to support the work. This position supports data collection, analysis, and interpretation, generating their own data as well as a large group of undergraduate, graduate and staff researchers.
ABSL3 Lab Personnel Management - 25%
• Ensuring training, coordinating schedules, supervise work, helping with 6-month and annual evaluations.
• Provides training support to investigators and research staff; assists with establishing budgets and ordering of animals.
• Coordinates the day-to-day activities of support staff specifically engaged in the carrying out of ABSL3 research.
• Acts as the primary administrative point of contact for internal research staff and as an operational liaison between Barker lab and regulating bodies.
Managing Lab Functions - 25%
• Managing the ABSL3 lab.
• Plans and coordinates the day-today initiation and operation of research and data collection activities in ABLS3.
• Assisting with ordering, managing IACUC, IBC and other regulatory paperwork and annual inspection.
• Coordinating shipping for lab.
• Assists in the development and writing of grant proposals and assist with manuscripts for specific research projects.
Developing Plans for Animal Experiments - 25%
• Ensuring efficient use of resources in the ABSL3, animal ordering, tracking and reporting, and training of staff/students in animal husbandry and procedures.
• Plans, implements, and maintains data collection; will coordinate and support the collection and analysis of data by student/staff workers.
• Monitors the progress of research activities; develops and maintains records of research activities, and prepares periodic and ad hoc reports, primarily for internal audiences that will be further edited for external review.
• Supports the conduct of research through data collection, analysis, and interpretation using advanced methods.
Microbiology - 20%
• Culturing and microscopy of various microbes, primarily Coccidioides to ensure inoculum preparation is standardized for all animal experiments.
• Colongy forming units (CFU) from tissues.
Other - 5%
• Service to PMI, meetings.
• Will direct the work of, mentor, and/or evaluate paid students.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master's degree in area of assignment.
• 4-6 years of relevant experience.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
• ABSL3 certification.
• Demonstrates mastery knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in Barker Lab, such as BSL2, BSL3, but specifically ABSL3 and animal research.

• Advanced knowledge of research methods, protocols, data collection, and analysis.

• Advanced Knowledge of proper safety and compliance practices in ABSL3 environments, including IACUC, DEA permits, IBC, and chemical safety.

• Advanced technical understanding and proficiency related to conducting relevant research procedures in ABSL3 environment.

Salary
Anticipated salary range is $60,000 to $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
