About the Department/College

The Department of Teaching and Learning at Northern Arizona University provides education programs to prepare pre-service teachers and support in-service teachers to be competent and committed professionals who will make positive differences in the lives of children and young adults. As of Fall 2024 the department has an enrollment of 1,689 which includes 249 Graduate and 1440 undergraduate students.

About the Position

This is a one-year Assistant Teaching Professor/Lecturer (non-tenure-track). The appointment will begin with the Spring 2025 academic semester. The Department of Teaching and Learning is located within the College of Education. For more information about the Department of Teaching and Learning, visit https://nau.edu/teaching-and-learning/. The position is renewable, based on availability of funds, effective performance, and program needs. The appointment will begin in January 2025.

The successful candidate should be able to teach courses in elementary education, provide support for specific cohorts of undergraduate teacher education programs, travel to various field sites to observe students and assist in part time faculty recruitment and development. The candidate is also expected to work with school districts and schools to place students for their practicum experiences. Documented commitment to curricular innovation and collaboration with university and practitioner colleagues is highly desired, as well as a demonstrated ability to teach effectively to a diverse student population and work with other diverse internal and external groups.

Responsibilities Include:

• teach undergraduate elementary courses
• provide support for specific cohorts in undergraduate teacher education programs
• supervise practicum
• participate in the placement of assigned practicum students
• advise students
• maintain a strong personal program of service
• assist with accreditation efforts
• attend and participate in departmental and college events

Full time, non-tenure track faculty position, based in Phoenix, Arizona, beginning in January 2025.

Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Teaching Professor:

• Earned doctoral degree by January 2025 in Curriculum and Instruction or closely related field
• Three (3) Years teaching at the Kindergarten to Grade 8 (K-8) level.
Lecturer:

• Master's degree in Elementary Education or related field
• Three (3) Years teaching at the Kindergarten to Grade 8 (K-8) level.

Preferred Qualifications

• Earned doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction or closely related field.
• Specialized training in Elementary Education
• Knowledge of best teaching practices/models for elementary education
• Online teaching experience
• Higher education experience related to preparing preservice teachers (K-8)
• Experience teaching adult learners
• Experience working collaboratively with agencies, school districts, college faculty and adult learners
• Demonstrated expertise through graduate course work and experience in all aspects of K-8th grade education
• Experience working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
• Evidence of a commitment to inclusive excellence.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Pedagogical and andragogical knowledge for preparing K-8 teachers.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with our education partners.
• Ability to use technology including but not confined to learning management systems

Driving Requirement

Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. Compensation & Benefits

Anticipated salary is $62,000 annually.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the https://nau.edu/university-policy-library/conditions-of-faculty-service/. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
