Summary The incumbent of this position will plan, execute and coordinate a program of health education related to total prevention and curative health services for Native Americans within the service area. This position is location in the Public Health Nursing Department and supervision is by the Supervisory Clinical, Public Health Nurse. Provide on-going assistance in the selection and development of health education methods and materials suited to specific groups and situations. Assists in the orientation of new personnel with respect to community characteristics; develops orientation material as prescribed in the IHS manual. Provides training assistance to Community Health Representatives on planned basis as well as seeks ways to give guidance to Community Health Representatives specific interests and areas of need. Provides supportive service to Service Unit staff (Medical, Dental, Nursing, Dietary, Administrative, Community Health Services, etc.) to develop the educational component of their respective program activities. Works with tribal leaders, tribal health and health related workers, public health and other agency staff in developing community health education activities in accord with program plans based on health needs and interests of the American Indian/Alaska Native people. Pin points educational opportunities in preventive and curative services in hospital and clinic settings, and works with other staff to realize such educational potential. Develops formal and informal training opportunities (Tribal groups, CHR's Auxiliary, students) intended to encourage involvement in community health planning. Assists in implementing a comprehensive school health program including a health education curriculum in local school districts. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience in the field of public health education, community organization, or social work equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples include: develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with agencies and organizations in public health care; develop and distribute health education materials and programs. OR completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education. OR Posses a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-11 grade level. Note: Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. Evaluation of Education and Experience: For positions with the Public Health Service at GS-9 and above, at least one academic year of the total amount of graduate study required must have been in a school of public health accredited by the American Public Health Association. Professional experience must have been in the field of public health education, community organization, or social work. Combinations of such graduate level education and professional experience are also acceptable. Specialized experience for all positions in this series may have been gained working with State and local health departments, with national and local voluntary agencies, organizing community groups to study health problems and methods of disease prevention, coordinating mass health programs, and evaluating and improving health education programs.
