Job Description

Supports campus law enforcement efforts by patrolling assigned area to detect and deter criminal or suspicious activity. Investigates accidents and crimes and writes detailed daily reports to document incidents on campus. Provides professional, courteous and effective service to all campus members, including students and university guests.

Essential Physical Requirements:

• Able to drag objects up to 165 pounds.
• Able to pass a physical abilities test.

Enforcing Local, State, and Federal Laws - 25%

• Patrols buildings and grounds, checking locked doors and windows, investigating suspicious activity or people and investigating unusual or suspicious circumstances.
• Patrols assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle to control traffic; prevents or deters crime and arrests violators; issues warnings or citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicle laws are observed.

Response and Investigation of Crimes and Accidents - 25%

• Assists public and university community; delivers emergency messages; helps motorists with flat tires, stalled vehicles or keys locked in car; advises university community on crime prevention techniques.
• Responds to emergency alarms and dispatched calls; makes quick decisions based on analysis of situations and facts.
• Investigates crimes, and accidents of all kinds; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts; files report with supervisor.

Administrative Duties and Training - 20%

• Writes and files with supervisor, crime reports and daily activity reports of disturbances, accidents, crimes and tickets issued in prescribed format.
• Trains new officers in the field according to established schedule and guidelines; submits written evaluation of trainee performance to supervisor
• Updates university law enforcement information and data to ensure access to accurate and timely information
• Gathers and analyzes requirements for additions or modifications to university law enforcement services and makes recommendations to department management.

Department Representation - 20%

• Testifies in court in response to subpoena as witness and/or reporting officer to crime.
• Answers questions regarding campus law enforcement.

Personnel Supervision - 5%

• Assumes some duties of Sergeant for squad in Sergeant's absence and/or as assigned.
• Performs minor disciplinary actions or performance evaluations.
• Prepares for and conducts briefing session prior to squad going on-duty.
• Reviews officer reports and daily activity logs for accuracy, completeness and essential elements.
• Assists other officers with difficult situations; decides which emergency situations require contacting Sergeant.

Other - 5%

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• 60 credit hours toward a college degree, AND
• Two years' experience as an Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZ Post) certified officer at the time of promotion; OR,
• Equivalent out-of-state certification; must obtain AZ Post certification within six months from hire date.
• Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver's license upon employment.

Driving Requirement

Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $65,580 - $72,302. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
