Job Description
The Assistant Director is responsible for the daily operations of the Veteran Success Center (VSC). The mission of the VSC is to provide support for our military-connected students to successfully transition into the environment of higher education.
The Assistant Director plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day operations of the Veteran Success Center promoting the efficiency and effectiveness of the various programs within the Center, ranging from the veteran orientation program to veteran mentoring. This also includes supervision of professional and student staff while overseeing customer service functions that assist the entire military connected community. The position is accountable for program development to advance departmental activities. This includes strategic communication efforts to inform the community of services and opportunities to connect with the university. The position also applies subject matter expertise to the role and serves as a coach and mentor to department staff.
Veteran Success Center Supervision - 35%
• Manages the Veteran Success Center and all aspects of its operation, to include the training and supervision of student veteran workers and the Program Coordinator, Sr.
• Assigns and coordinates work tasks ensuring necessary training is provided to maintain effectiveness and compliance.
• Conducts staff performance reviews and provides formal feedback.
• Monitors employee interactions to foster a productive and inclusive work environment.
Veteran Success Center Management - 25%
• Works closely with the Director of Veteran and Military Services to assist in the communication of services available to our Veteran students, including VA educational benefits for all NAU campuses, community college partners, and outside agencies and government entities as required.
• Responsible for interacting and developing partnerships with other departments and work units within the University and Flagstaff community in order to effectively serve our Military Connected students.
• Manages budgets for the VSC, allocating funds by areas of need in order to reach the departmental goals for the Center.
• Collaborates with the Director to develop and maintain current, theory-based, innovative approaches focusing on best practices in order to most effectively serve our Veteran students.
• Oversees the implementation of the Vet Jacks Mentoring program.
• Partners with university departments to support career development within the military-connected student community.
• Coordinates counseling services options for the student community.
Program Event Support - 20%
• Assists with events, both social and educational, within the department that connect the military connected student to the broader university community. This includes Veteran Orientation, Veterans Week, and the Military Connected Conference.
Program Management and Assessment - 15%
• Responsible for developing a comprehensive program of actions related to the retention and graduation of our military-connected students.
• Conducts ongoing data-driven assessments, analyzes and evaluates effectiveness of program practices for the VSC.
• Serves as a member of the Veteran and Military Services management team by participating in strategic planning, staffing decisions and other key areas within the department.
• Provides guidance and consistency in policy and procedure decisions within the department.
• Establishes learning outcomes for program and conducts regular assessments of student needs.
• Represents the Veteran and Military Services department various university and community committees.
• Serves as a designated back-up for the Veteran and Military Services department in the absence of the Director.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
• 3-5 years of relevant experience.
• 2-4 years of management or supervisory experience.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working with the military-connected community.
• Experience in Higher Education.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Knowledge of principles of programs, policy implementation, and department administration.
• Knowledge of higher education administrative systems and related business principles.
• Knowledge of higher education law, including FERPA, Title IX, HIPAA, etc.
• Knowledge of funding sources that include the GI Bill®, Financial Aid, and DoD Tuition Assistance Skills.
• Supervisory practices and principles.
• Organizational and project management skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of Salesforce, PeopleSoft and OnBase Abilities.
• Possesses strong leadership practices.
• Possesses strong problem solving, organizational and analytical capabilities.

Salary
Salary range begins at $77,871. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
