Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Campus Health Services is hiring one (1) Medical Lab Technician. Under general supervision, this position performs routine tests in medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results. This position also processes specimens for testing and dispatch. Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment. Performs a variety of clerical duties for the laboratory staff. This position reports to the CHS Laboratory & Radiology Manager.

Testing, Quality Control, and Maintenance - 60%

• Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory.
• Performs routine tests in the medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results.
• Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, and reporting.
• Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment.

Clerical - 20%

• Maintains records of patient results.
• Provides clerical support for laboratory staff including incoming and outgoing lab reports, making copies, maintaining and organizing filing systems, and end of the month statistical reports.

Specimen Collection and Processing - 10%

• Draws intravenous and peripheral blood. Collects samples from patients; evaluates specimens received for testing to determine suitability for testing; notifies physicians or nurse practitioners of rejected specimens. Prepares and processes laboratory samples using established protocols.

Customer Service - 5%

• Greets patients, answers questions for both provider and patients.
• Answers and fields phone calls for both provider and patients.

Other - 5%

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Work environment is primarily in the Campus Health Laboratory. This position requires sitting, standing, kneeling, and walking while working with equipment. Sitting for extended periods while working on a computer and performing clerical duties. The ability to lift 20+ lbs. May have to work and/or travel across campus as part of the duties of the lab.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Lab Science or Medical Lab Technology from an accredited institution.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Phlebotomy experience preferred.

• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.
• Possess strong problem solving, organizational, and analytical capabilities.
• Skill in record maintenance and record reviews.
• Skill in both verbal and written communication.
• Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
• Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.
• Ability to perform a range of clinical lab tests, chemical analyses, and biological samples.
• Ability to draw intravenous and peripheral blood.
• Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with accuracy, speed, and diplomacy.

Salary

Salary range begins at $38,628. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
