Job Description
The Center for Adaptable Western Landscapes seeks multiple Biological Research Technicians to be hired through a cooperative agreement between Northern Arizona University and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The Research Technicians will primarily conduct field-based sampling of vegetation and soils in Mojave Desert and other parts of the desert Southwest. Additionally, this position will be responsible for data collection, entry, and analysis on a windows-based computer. This position is field-based (10 to 20 days per month), part-time, and seasonal (Starting March 2025 for up to 6 months). Applicant must have a valid driver's license and Arizona address. Position receives $30/day camping per diem rate when in the field.
Field Work/Data Collection - 80%
• Performs various technical functions in research settings to generate and validate data
• Conduct field-based sampling of vegetation and soils in Mojave Desert and other parts of the desert Southwest.
• Use maps, compasses, and GPS units to navigate in the field
• Sets up, operates, and maintains a variety of standard laboratory or test equipment of moderate complexity
• Practices safety and environmental control methods
Data Entry and Management - 15%
• Enter data and manage data quality
• Obtains and processes data using standardized procedures; enters data into appropriate databases and performs basic interpretations
• Uses standardized and/or specialized statistical and scientific programs to process experimental data.
Other duties as assigned - 5%
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, or environmental sciences
• Valid driver's license
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
• One year of specialized experience as a Biological Technician with duties related to this position.
• Experience with methods, procedure, and techniques of collection of biological data.
• Experience using maps, compasses, and GPS units to navigate in the field.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access software.
• Field experience working in remote backcountry settings under sometimes harsh field conditions.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
• Knowledge of processes, methods & procedures of biological science.
• Knowledge of routine field data collection procedures.
• Knowledge of procedures utilized in a biological lab.
Skills
• Skills in operation, maintenance, and servicing of biological recording and measuring instruments.
• Experience backpacking in the southwestern US including areas with steep terrain and with up to 50 lbs. of gear.
Abilities
• Ability to work in remote backcountry settings with little supervision.
• Possesses superior attention to detail, organization skills, and record keeping abilities.
• Demonstrates problem solving related to research procedures.
• Organizes data and information in a matter to support analysis.
• Communicates effectively, using appropriate technical language.
• Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.
Background Information
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary
Hourly rate starts at $22/hour.
FLSA Status
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
