• This position is posted as Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator, Intermediate, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Instructional Laboratory Coordinator, Intermediate.
• This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
• This is a 10 month position. Successful candidate will be expected to work full time from August to May. All benefits will be accumulated at a .83 FTE rate.
Job Description
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for the position of Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator, Intermediate. The successful candidate will have experience teaching general and/or organic chemistry laboratories to lower division chemistry students and training and supervising teaching assistants in all aspects of the course. They will be trained in chemical safety and experienced in overseeing undergraduates in a chemical laboratory setting.
This Chemistry Lab Coordinator, Intermediate position is a 10 month position. Successful candidate will be expected to work full time from August to May. All benefits will be accumulated at a .83 FTE rate.
Teaching - 40%
• Teaches labs including using lab instruments with some evening labs including monitoring lab safety.
• Establishes a positive learning atmosphere that assists learners in achieving curriculum objectives.
• Implements procedures for the use of laboratory equipment and provides instructional laboratory support services regarding the proper and safe use of equipment.
Preparation and Grading - 25%
• Prepares quizzes and lab lectures.
• Grades lab notebooks and reports.
• Maintains student records.
Safety - 10%
• Monitors classes for lab safety and compliance.
• Evaluates existing laboratory equipment and supplies, and recommends improvements or new purchases.
• Collects, processes and disposes of laboratory waste.
Training - 20%
• Trains and supervises teaching assistants.
Other - 5%
• Attends instructional staff meetings and other department related meetings/activities.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• B.S. or B.A. degree in chemistry or related field, and
• 2 years of relevant laboratory teaching experience; or
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
• Evidence of independent and consistent teaching effectiveness as a teaching assistant.
• More than two semesters experience as a teaching assistant in general chemistry laboratory courses.
• Teaching or lab experience in organic chemistry laboratory course.
• Completed course in chemical laboratory safety.
• Experience in training undergraduate teaching or research assistants.
• Supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
• Experience teaching general and/or organic chemistry laboratories to lower division chemistry students and training.
• Experience supervising teaching assistants.
• Trained in chemical safety.
• Experienced in overseeing undergraduates in a chemical laboratory setting.
• Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques used in laboratory and research work.
• Knowledge of university and departmental safety regulations.
Skills
• Skill in prioritizing and completing multiple tasks of varying complexity and urgency in a timely and efficient manner.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Abilities
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.

Background Information

Salary
Salary range begins at $42,570. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
