Responsibilities The Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System (NAVAHCS) is seeking a full-time Podiatrist for the Specialty & Diagnostic Service Line. Podiatrists treat a variety of foot and ankle ailments, including calluses, ingrown toenails, heel spurs, arthritis, congenital foot and ankle deformities, and arch problems. They also treat foot and leg problems associated with diabetes and other diseases. Some podiatrists spend most of their time performing surgery, such as foot and ankle reconstruction. The incumbent will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following: Assessing the condition of a patient's feet, ankles, or lower legs by reviewing the patient's medical history, listening to his or her concerns, and performing a physical examination. Diagnosing foot, ankle, and lower leg problems through physical exams, x rays, medical laboratory tests, and other methods. Providing treatment for foot, ankle, and lower leg ailments, such as prescribing special shoe inserts (orthotics) to improve a patient's mobility. Performing foot and ankle surgeries, such as removing bone spurs, fracture repairs, and correcting other foot and ankle deformities. Advising and instructing patients on foot and ankle care, and on general wellness techniques. Prescribing medications. Coordinating patient care with other physicians. Referring patients to other physicians or specialists if they detect larger health problems, such as diabetes or vascular disease. Conducting research, reading journals, and attending conferences to keep up with advances in podiatric medicine and surgery. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
