Veterinary Assistants and Laboratory Animal Caretakers

S UMMARY OF J OB P URPOSE AND F UNCTION

The Veterinary Assistant supports the veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring q uality veterinary care for all p ets, advocates for p ets, educates clients on all aspects of p et health, and ensures a safe and effective hospital environment.

E SSENTIAL R ESPONSIBILITIES AND T ASKS

Act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure the best quality p et care and to maximize the veterinarian's and veterinary technician’s produc tivity. C ommunicate with veterinarian, veterinary technicians and all other associate s to maintain the flow of patients.

Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times. This includes performing or preparing procedures that do not req uire veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance, completing preparatory work for other procedures, ensuring that clients and p ets are comfortable in the hospital, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical p ets as allowed in the state practice acts .

Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, p et health needs, hospital services and other issues.

Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.

Ensure the safety of p ets, clients a nd associate s by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs.  Assist with surgery as applicable.

Utilize technical skills to the fullest, within stat e practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties.

Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.  Other job duties as assigned.

Client needs and work volume may often require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job. This position requires special hours including working weekends and evenin gs.

Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.  The noise level in the work environment is moderately high.

Requires sufficient ambulatory skills in order to perform duties while at hospital.

Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds .

Requires good hand - eye coordination, arm - hand - finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.

Certificate of completion from a NA VTA approved Veterinary Assistant program , or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities . High School Diploma or equivalent preferred .

Must be able to perform all required sk ills of NAVTA approved veterinary assistant program at a level in which to aid in the efficiency of the practice .

Must be at least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography (x - ray) and exposure to radioactive substances.

Job Description Summary: The Veterinary Assistant is a key member of the hospital team who supports and assists the veterinarians and veterinary technicians, ensuring the safety of pets, clients and other associates, and the continuity of quality veterinary care.

Preferred Education/Licenses: Certificate of completion from a NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Preferred Experience: Must be able to perform all required skills of NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant programs at a level that aids in the efficiency of the practice.

A Day in the Life of a Banfield Veterinary Assistant

The Vet Assistant provides professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times, making sure that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital. You will use your technical skills on a daily basis, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties. Other responsibilities include:

· Helping maintain the flow of patients

· Communicating with the veterinarian and vet techs

· Carrying out or setting up procedures that do not require veterinarian or vet tech assistance

· Adhering to hospital standards that keep pets safe, and the treatment areas, exam rooms and labs clean and organized

· Educating clients about our Optimum Wellness Plans® and the importance of preventive care

· Mentoring other members of the hospital team

Positions available for experience veterinary assistant in GP, ER and ICU. Minimal experience with general practice medicine, vx protocols and preventions. VCA Northwest Animal Hospital is a multi-location, AAHA accredited veterinary hospital dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to our cherished community. We are currently seeking a full-time, experienced Veterinary Assistant/Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate is a strong team player, multi-tasker, and who possesses excellent communication skills. CVT certification is a plus but is not required.

**We are looking for Experienced Veterinary Assistants to join our brand-new, VCA Urgent Care Animal Hospital in Chandler, AZ.**

Our Technical team works in pairs to maximize efficiency while providing patient care. Utilizing a digital whiteboard, all diagnostics and treatments are clearly communicated allowing the medical team to complete cases quickly while keeping the doctor up to date on diagnostic results. An emphasis on low-stress handling, hands-free radiology, and a well-organized treatment space allows you to keep the patients calm and safe during their visit. The virtual waiting room has a dynamic capacity analyzer that assesses the team’s pace and updates clients on the wait time digitally. When the team reaches capacity for the day, the waiting room automatically closes. This allows all team members to leave on time, with all medical records and patient care completed. The technician and assistant team only does patient care, not answering phones, presenting estimates, or checking out clients needed.

**What You’ll Do**

+ Obtain quality lab samples via venipuncture, cystocentesis, fecal collection, etc.

+ Place intravenous catheters in feline and canine patients

+ Perform in-hospital laboratory diagnostics including urinalysis, cytologies, etc.

+ Process lab samples utilizing in-hospital laboratory equipment

+ Use low-stress patient-handling techniques

+ Perform diagnostic radiographs (hands-free as allowed)

+ Administer injections (intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular), medications, and nursing care as directed by a veterinarian

+ Monitor patients under general anesthesia and sedation utilizing multi-parameter assessment equipment

+ Maintain accurate, complete digital medical records

+ Fill prescriptions (as allowed by law)

+ Maintain a clean work environment including following any infectious disease protocols, handling medical/biomedical, and infectious waste appropriately

**Qualifications**

+ **Minimum 3 years of veterinary experience in a general practice or emergency setting**

+ Ability to operate with a sense of urgency and high pace

+ Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

+ Willingness to jump in as needed

+ Able to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment

+ Comfortable asking for help and clarification when needed

+ Possess high attention to detail

**Schedule:** 4/10’s. Full-time position. The hospital is open 7 days a week, 10 am- 8 pm. **One weekend day per week and holiday coverage are required.**

**Compensation:** The pay range for this position is $18 - 23 / hour. Compensation is negotiable based on education, experience, and other relevant credentials.
