    Schedule:

    Summer: The schedule will be M-F, 8-hour days - up to 40 hours per week. One overnight experience for multiple days as an entire crew is anticipated during orientation week.

    After the YCC program: To be determined by Petrified Forest National Park.

    Mentors will be provided housing by the Petrified Forest National Park.

    Compensation

    $675/wk total, paid out bi-weekly. Housing provided.

    YCC Mentor Summary:

    YCC Mentors will work in a team of two guiding a crew of up to 8 young adults, ages 17-20, in conservation projects in Petrified Forest National Park. Mentors must provide training, leadership, and direction while leading their crews by example through hard work, safety, and enthusiasm. A passion for being outdoors and working with a team is required.

    Projects this year are likely to include trail construction and maintenance, fence work, recreation site maintenance, and a couple of days with wildlife/range data collection and monitoring.

    Petrified Forest Internship Summary:

    After the YCC season ends July 26th, the Mentor positions will transition into internships with the Petrified Forest National Park. Lead by a project partner from the Park, the interns will assist with various projects in the Park.

    Training

    YCC Mentor leadership training will include some focus on youth-specific training. Topics may include: Leave No Trace, Outdoor Living, Crew Culture and Diversity, and goal setting. Depending on project needs, crews have possible specialized opportunities for instruction in trail structures, crosscut use, and safety. Informal training will continue throughout the term with on-the-ground skills training to include tools maintenance, plant identification, and an overview of public land management agencies.

    Petrified Forest National Park will provide additional training for their interns for project-specific skills.

    Expectations:

    AZCC is a drug-free organization; alcohol and illegal substances are prohibited. AZCC is an independent, non-residential program. However, Petrified Forest National Park may provide housing for mentors, which includes running water and showers. The Mentor must supply his/her/their outdoor gear and equipment such as a day pack, work pants, hiking/work boots, etc. A suggested gear list will be provided before starting the term of service. Additionally, AZCC has pro deals and some gear available to borrow.

    Mentors will be camping all week unless they are local, usually starting Sunday night.

    Qualifications:

    + Be between the ages of 21 and 24

    + Have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status.

    + Have a high school diploma or GED.

    + Pass background checks: all offers of positions are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public

    + Registry and Federal criminal background check.

    + Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.

    + Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to be insured by us – for example no DUIs in the past 3 years.

    Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC):

    Arizona Conservation Corps, a program of Conservation Legacy, aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. AZCC is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with conservation service work projects on public lands. AZCC operates programs across Arizona that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation. AZCC has program offices in Flagstaff, Tucson, and Pinetop.

    Tonto National Forest:

    At over 2.9 million acres, the Tonto National Forest is the largest national forest in Arizona, and the seventh largest national forest among 154 USDA National Forests. The Tonto features some of the most rugged and inherently beautiful land in the country. Sonoran Desert cacti and flat lands slowly give way to the highlands of the Mogollon Rim. This variety in vegetation and range in altitude -- from 1,300 to 7,900 feet -- offers outstanding recreational opportunities throughout the year, whether it's lake beaches or cool pine forest. The Tonto National Forest, and the Mesa Ranger District in particular, consistently ranks as the busiest Forest and District in America for recreation.

    Position Summary:

    Tonto National Forest, Mesa Ranger District is seeking a temporary, full-time Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Crewmember. The primary focus of this position will be to patrol and assist in the maintenance of dispersed recreation sites, OHV staging areas and Forest Service roads and trails.

    Essential Responsibilities and Functions:

    + Patrol off-highway vehicle (OHV) areas as part of a team including backcountry remote roads and trails.

    + Complete all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and off-highway vehicle (OHV) training (provided by the Forest Service); complete trailer loading/towing training and regularly tow trailers up to 20’ in length.

    + Assist with permit and safety compliance in OHV areas.

    + Coordinate closely with Forest Service and partner law enforcement agencies; participate in joint patrols with law enforcement and assist with issuance of federal violation notices.

    + Provides public information and interpretive services, including detailed information concerning recreational opportunities.

    + Maintain recreation areas and equipment, including regular checks and maintenance of OHV staging areas.

    + Survey and inspect trails and roads; upload data into ArcGIS programs on Forest Service issued iPads.

    + Assist in fence and gate installation, maintenance and repairs. Install and maintain signage, operate hand tools and assist heavy equipment operators as appropriate.

    + Act as a representative of the Forest Service including wearing an official uniform and presenting a professional image.

    Required Skills

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Possess good interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills; professionally communicate with uncooperative members of the public.

    + Interest in off-road recreation and protecting natural resources.

    + A self-starter that can easily work alone or as a member of a team.

    Project work will primarily happen at Petrified Forest National Park performing deferred maintenance work on Park Trails, Historic Maintained Landscapes, and Maintained Archaeological Sites.

    Expectations:

    AZCC is a drug-free organization; alcohol and illegal substances are prohibited. AZCC is an independent, non-residential program, however, the Petrified Forest National Park will provide park housing (June 1 - July 28) and a vehicle for crew travel for the work week. The crew member must supply his/her/their own personal outdoor gear and equipment such as a day pack, work pants, hiking/work boots, etc. A suggested gear list will be provided prior to starting the term of service. Additionally, AZCC has pro-deals and some gear available to borrow.

    Qualifications:

    + Be between the ages of 21 and 24

    + Have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status.

    + Have a high school diploma or GED

    + Pass background checks: all offers of positions are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and Federal criminal background check

    + Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award

    + Must have a valid driver's license and no DUI in the past 3 years

You must be able to do so at a distance of up to 50 meters and in conditions with limited visibility or loud background noise such as darkness or high winds.

    + Effectively perceive, understand and follow direction by others so that you will be able to successfully execute appropriate and perhaps unfamiliar techniques to manage hazards. These directions may be given before the hazard is encountered or may need to be given during exposure to the hazard.

    + Stay alert and focused for several hours at a time while traveling and working in varied weather conditions

    + Perceive and comprehend significant and apparent hazards, including those hazards previously identified by others.

    + Respond appropriately to stress or crises.

    + If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self-medicating without assistance from others.

    + Outdoor Skills and Fitness (where appropriate)

    + Learn and safely perform fundamental outdoor living/travel and work skills as appropriate to the project. Additionally, remain adequately hydrated, fed, and properly dressed so as to remain generally healthy and safe, avoiding environmental injuries.

    + Conditions of this environment may vary significantly and may include severe and/or trying weather. The remoteness is such that it may require at a minimum one hour, but perhaps in excess of 12 hours, to reach the nearest advanced medical care.
